COUNSELLING NEEDS OF ADULT LEARNERS IN ADULT EDUCATION CENTRES IN ENUGU URBAN

Abstract

The study investigated the Guidance needs of Adult Education Learners in Adult Education Study Centres in Enugu Urban of Enugu State. Three research questions guided the study. Survey research design was used to generate data for answering the research questions. The population of the study consisted of one hundred and twelve (112) Adult Education Learners in the area under study. There was no sampling of the population. The data for the study were collected with a research instrument called Adult Learners Guidance Needs Questionnaire (ALGNQ). The instrument was validated by two experts in Guidance and Counselling and one in Measurement and Evaluation from Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Agbani. Cronbach Alpha statistic was used to establish the coefficient of the instrument which was found to be 0.73. The coefficient was high enough to show that the instrument is reliable. The study found that the adult education learners have adjustment needs such as adjusting to the demands of their work and studying for examination, financial adjustment, raising fund for their study and how to procure and utilize learning resource materials. Based on the findings of the study and conclusion, appropriate recommendations on handling the guidance needs of the adult education learners were put forward.
