FACTORS AFFECTING NOMADIC EDUCATION IN ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

The study focused on factors affecting nomadic education in Enugu State, Nigeria. The purpose of the study was to find out whether lack of incentives and persistent herdsmen/farmers clashes affect nomadic education in Enugu State. Two research questions guided the study. Descriptive census survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised all the 225 nomadic education teachers in the 65 nomadic schools in Enugu State. No sampling was done because of the design adopted and as such the population was small and manageable. A 17 itemed questionnaire validated by two research expert was used for data collection. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient; an overall reliability index of .86 was obtained. 225 copies of the questionnaire instrument were administered by the researchers with the help of one research assistant. Only 200 copies were retrieved and used for data analysis, 25 copies were not retrieved. Mean with standard deviation was used to analyze the data obtained on the research questions while real limit of numbers was employed to determine the decision rule, thus the upper limits (2.50)and above were regarded as agree, while limits below (2.50) is disagree. The findings revealed that lack of incentives and persistent herdsmen/farmers clashes constituted factors affecting nomadic education in Enugu State. The researchers recommended among others, incorporation of the nomads in the conventional school system as well as an increased awareness on nomadic education.
