Abstract

This paper examines the phenomenon of Almajiri, and the different initiatives of Almajiri Education in Nigeria so as to make education accessible to this special group. The significance of basic education as stated in Universal Basic Education Programme is to provide access, equity and quality education to all Nigerians of school-age. It is therefore important to examine how UBE programme has contributed to the education of Almajiri child and the challenges confronting the implementation of the programme so as to have quality Almajiri education in Nigeria. This paper commences with comprehensive description of Almajiri and it X-rays UBE concept and challenges in implementing UBE programmes in Nigeria. The paper concludes that adequate funds should be provided so as to implement UBE programmes to educate Almajiri children in Nigeria. The paper recommended that Universal Basic Education commission should be made accessible, and sustainable by successive governments so as to empower Almajiri children academically through conventional education system
