Abstract

 Distance education is an educational alternative in teaching and learning replacing the conventional method of teaching and learning. Distance learning if well articulated towards development goals is aimed at reducing poverty in Nigeria. With regards to the contributions of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) to educational policies, practices and programmes, most definitions of distance education (de) appear to portray the possibility of communication between participants in a learning system across time and space through the mediation of technologies. The overriding problem with the evolution of distance learning system in Nigeria is in the policies and implementation strategies. The aim of this paper is to explore the identified nature of distance education policies and practices, especially in Nigeria. The paper ended with conclusion and some recommendations.
