Abstract

Social capital first conceptualized by Pierre Bourdieu and further developed by Coleman and Putnam, can be considered to be a set of social relations’ that provide access to resources. Despite its recognized role on community development efforts, considerable variation exist among researchers regarding the definition, dimensions and indicators of social capital. Lin social resources theoretical framework posits social capital as an important input in development efforts and guides operationalization of social capital, Specifically, community linkage, financial institution’ contribution, collection to create facilities, collective action to resolve issues and local ownership contribute toward the success of community development effort. This paper commences with comprehensive discussion of conceptual clarifications of social capital, community development, social capital and community development: the recursive relationship and social capital, individuals and communities: the link. This paper concludes with recommendations that development approach of present government should re-orient emphasis on social norms, values, beliefs and institutions to enhance community development efforts within our society.
